Divorce costs Australia $14 billion a year in Government costs (such as housing assistance, emergency services and police and court costs), stress leave, and family lawyers legal fees.
The time taken from separation to divorce is too long and too stressful – we need to reduce levels of domestic violence, suicide and even murder because of the inability of the divorce system to recognise the downside of the adversarial system. In 2014 the tragic case of the Batty family shocked the nation – Rosie Batty watched her 11 year old son, Luke, murdered by his father on a cricket pitch in front of family and friends.
We only know about Luke Batty because Rosie agreed to speak publicly about the event.
Most people don’t speak out about how separation and divorce is ruining their lives, so the divorce system doesn’t change.
We want to change that.
